Chrysler tank arsenal. Thousands of rivets are used in the production of one of the huge thirty-eight ton M-3 tanks. Whenever possible rivets are replaced by welded sections, but throughout much of the tank, as in the side plates on which this riveter is working, the steel plate is too heavy for welding. The riveting itself, a twenty-five ton

Tank manufacture (Chrysler). These are partially completed M-3 tanks, twenty-eight ton steel giants being turned out at the huge Chrysler tank arsenal in Detroit. The camera was directed toward the end of the three main assembly lines. Massachusetts assembly methods developed in automobile manufacture are used. Note overhead cranes for heavy parts

Tank manufacture (Chrysler). Expert welders are important to Uncle Sam's defense industries. Not only are welded connections as strong as, or stronger than, riveted connections, but they mean a saving steel and in overall weight. This welder is working on the engine support assembly of an M-3 tank at the Chrysler tank arsenal in Detroit

Tank manufacture (Chrysler). Ready for installation in Chrysler M-3 tanks, these routh turret castings, which weigh 4,000 pounds each, have just been received at the huge Detroit tank arsenal where 10,000 men are turning out these twenty-eight ton rolling arsenals

Shipbuilding. "Liberty" ships. Shell plates of a ship at the bow, where the inner plates are first bolted to the outer plates for added strength. The rivets are countersunk to be flush on the outer side. Production scene in a large Eastern shipyard. Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyards Inc., Baltimore, Maryland

Kitchens roll to Russia. The old army "rolling kitchen" has rolled all the way to Russia. The old slum wagon was not the most popular eating house in the army butis is one of the most popular in the overcrowded ports of the Black Sea. Thousands of refugees from inland towns gathered at the ports without shelters, food, or even funds. Hundreds were on the verge of starvation and the town's supplies were exhausted. The American Red Cross with the aid of six old army kitchens which had been sent out from France opened suoupkitchens where thousands were fed daily. This picture shows Lieutenant L.M. Foster of Chicago, dishing out soup to the refugees in Novorossisk three days before the fall of the city and the evacuation of the Red Cross mission

Buffalo, New York. Symington-Gould, makers of tank, ship and railroad parts. Woman operator of a five ton crane picking up rough castings of truck train for railroads. She operated this same crane in the last war; in between was a housewife

Shipbuilding. "Liberty" ships. Wooden templates are used as patterns for the laying out of a number of steel plates. These workers are transferring the templates designs, or patterns, to steel, to be used in ships under construction at a large Eastern shipyard. All parts are prefabricated in this huge Eastern plant which formerly turned out freight cars. The completed sections are then carried six miles to the ways on flat cars. Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyards Inc., Baltimore, Maryland

Watts Bar Dam, Tennessee. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Hooks of 250 ton crane

Aboard a trap fishing boat, pulling the net into the boat. The trap, which is nothing but a gigantic net, is pulled into the boat on one side and thrown overboard on the other until finally a small pocket is made where fish mill around by the thousands. Sometimes several big tuna, locally called horse mackerel, must be gaffed and brought aboard. This is a struggle because tuna weigh between 300 and 800 pounds. The rest of the fish, whiting, mackerel, and squid are dipped aboard with a hand net. Provincetown, Massachusetts
