Germans are insulting American intelligence, Czech Minister tells members of press club. Washington, D.C., March 29. A guest of honor at a luncheon of the National Press Club today, Col. Vladimir S. Hurban, Czechoslovak Minister who refused to surrender his legation after Germany took over his country, told members that Germans are insulting American Intelligence by disseminating "insidious' statements in this country. Discussing his statues, he said he represents in this country "the Czech-Slovak Republic as it was recognized by the United States and other principal countries even before the Treaty of Versailles." 3-29-39

Communists arrested in attempt to picket German Embassy. Washington, D.C., Nov. 30. Communists attempting to picket the German Embassy today were arrested and hauled off the the Hoosegow. The group calling themselves the "Committee against Nazi intervention in Spain" protested Germany's recognition of Spainish Fascists and demanded that Germany free Lawrence Simpson, American seaman imprisoned in Germany. 11/30/36

Some work of German bombs. Headquarters of the Friends' Ambulance Unit at ... after 2 German bombs had just bombed it. Two men were killed and 4 injured. Casualty list was light as most of the personnel were in the abri... under the part of the building still standing. An A.R.C. worker, T.H. Vail, placed with the Friend's Ambulance Unit by the Belgium Commission was on the 4th floor of this building when it collapsed. He was sleeping in the same room with 2 men who were killed. Vail came down on top of the debris. The Friends' Ambulance Unit, an organization of English Quakers, has been working in the closest cooperation with the Belgian Commission of the R.C. through the Red Cross, the American people have, for some time, been aiding in the support of the Friends' Ambulance Unit, part of whose efforts have been directed toward helping the Belgians in the territory immediately back of the firing line in free Belgium

Called as the first witness before the Special House Committee investigating Un-American activities, John Metcalfe, former Chicago reporter but now an investigator for the committee, gives Chairman Martin Dies (right) a Nazi salute before taking the stand. Joining under the name of Hellmut Oberwinder, Metcalfe related his experiences as a member of the German-American bund and charged the organization has a secret relationship with the Nazi government in Germany, 8/12/38
