Gay-MacGregor-Allen Cabin, Rock Prairie Road, Millican, Brazos County, TX

description

Summary

1988 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Honorable Mention

Significance: The Gay-McGregor-Allen House, one of the first houses built in Brazos County, is probably the only surviving house that predates the Republic of Texas. Thomas Gay, the founder of Washington on the Brazos, first capitol of the Republic, arrived in Texas from Georgia in May 1830 with Stephen F. Austin's second colony. Gay bought this quarter-league from Robert Mathews in July 1834. Assessed value increased twelve-fold between 1834 and 1838 suggesting a construction date for the house. After his death in December 1838 his widow Eleanor kept the Peach Creek property, which remained in the family until 1868. After forty years in the McGregor family, the land passed through several owners to E. E. Allen in 1927. It is now owned by Bennie and Evelyn Allen of Bryan...
