Significance: A National Historic Landmark, it was completed in 1886 as the summer home of James Wallace Pinchot. The chateausque mansion was based on a design by Richard Morris Hunt. It was subsequently modified probably by James Pinchot himself. The interior finishes were designed by Henry Edwards-Ficken. James Pinchot had two sons who contributed significantly to the development of the estate. Gifford was the first Chief of the Forest Service, an ardent conservationist, and the Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania...
