Price-Poore House, 427 Park Street, Charlottesville, Charlottesville, Virginia

description

Summary

1993 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry

Significance: This house, dating from the late 1830s and built as a residence along the fringe of Charlottesville's Courthouse Square, should be noted for the preservation of the fabric of its continued evolution. Beginning as a modest vernacular single-pile dwelling of the Greek Revival, the Price-Poore House grew in size and fashion in the late 1860s with the addition of the city's earliest mansard roof. It documents the fusing of the vernacular and high style forms evident in nineteenth century Charlottesville.
