Summary: The Reverend Dr. Samuel Berry McKinney recalls growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, and attending Morehouse College, where he got to know fellow freshman Martin Luther King, Jr. After service in the Army Flight Corps during World War II and finishing his college education, McKinney became a minister at a church in Seattle, Washington, where he contributed to the creation of the Liberty Bank. He discusses his role in founding the Central Area Civil Rights Committee in Seattle.

Biographical History: The Reverend Dr. Samuel McKinney attended Morehouse College and became the minister of the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Seattle, Washington. He was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Seattle and founded the Central Area Civil Rights Committee.

Acquisition Note: The Civil Rights History Project is a joint project of the American Folklife Center, Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of African American History and Culture to collect video and audio recordings of personal histories and testimonials of individuals who participated in the Civil Rights movement.

The cotton pickers on this farm were temporary neighbors to the owner. Four adults and seven children. The latter as follows: one six year old boy picks one hundred pounds a day. His father said "He picks one hundred pounds every day." Two children of seven pick one hundred and fifty pounds a day each. One of nine years picks about two hundred pounds. Several from ten to fifteen pick three to four hundred pounds. The whole group picks a bale a day. (1,600 to 1,800) pounds a day. Location: McKinney [vicinity], Texas.
