The Bellamy House, 2819 Cheverly Avenue, Cheverly, Prince George's County, MD

description

Summary

1989 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry

Significance: The Bellamy House, built in 1925, is one of twenty five Sears houses of twenty different model types built in the town of Cheverly, Maryland. The town's adjacency to a railroad line probably accounts for the number of Sears houses built there since they were shipped by rail. The Bellamy House is the "Alhambra" model, named for its Mission Style facade. The typical model was modified for this site by the removal of the sun room which would have been on the north side of the house, and the extension of the porch around the side of the house to the south. Subsequently, the house was sided in cement asbestos singles, roofed in asphalt, had aluminum awnings installed, and an addition was built on the north side.
