description

Summary

Title, date and keywords based on information provided by the photographer.

Designed by Charles Ellet Jr., who also worked on the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge, the Wheeling bridge was the first to span the Ohio River, and was an important link on the National Road. Ellet and John A. Roebling were invited to submit designs and estimates for a bridge over the east channel of the river to Wheeling Island, part of the City of Wheeling in the middle of the Ohio River. Ellet and Roebling were the foremost authorities on suspension bridges. Ellet received the contract, and the bridge was completed in 1849. The "Old Stone" designation refers to its large stone arches to which suspension cables are tied on each end of the bridge. The structure is widely regarded as the most significant pre-Civil War bridge remaining in America.
