Significance: It was the home of James Buchanan from 1849, when he retired as Secretary of State until his death in 1869. During this period, Buchanan served as the 15th President of the U.S., 1857-1861. It wat built in 1828 on the order of William Jenkins, who gave the mansion its name. Jenkins occupied the house for about 10 years and was followed by 2 other owners before Buchanan purchased the estate.
