The great variety of men whom one encounters in a big American Base Hospital is a continuous evidence of the manner in which the rank and file of the army represents the whole country. One of the patients at the Dartford Hospital, near London, is a wounded man who is always reading, and the books which he reads are enough to give a headache to an ordinary man. On this occasion when Captain Herbert Johnson of Boston visited him on a Red Cross errand, he had three books in front of him, one a work of Pure Philosophy, another a book of Sociological Ethics and a third, related to some obtuse theory of evolution.
