Photographic survey of the construction of the Murmansk railway, including views of the railroad, excavation and construction, depots and stations, railroad bridges, workers, and officials. Also includes views of cities, towns, and villages. Images document religious facilities (monasteries, cathedrals, churches, and chapels), waterways (canals, lakes, rivers, rapids, waterfalls, inlets, and islands), as well as agricultural and fishing activities. Includes some images of schools, factories, and quarries. Group portraits show local inhabitants including "Karelian types," Austrian prisoners of war at a military barracks, Prokudin-Gorskiĭ with two Murmans, and Prokudin-Gorskiĭ with five others--on a railroad handcar. Also includes images of items and locations associated with Peter the Great.
