He was recently brought before the Judge of the Juvenile Court for incorrigibility at home. Is now out on parole, and was working again for drug company when he got a job carrying grips in the Union Depot. He is on the job from 6:00 A.M. to 11:00 P.M. (seventeen hours a day) for seven days in the week. His mother and the Judge think[s] he uses cocaine, and yet they let him put in these long hours every day. He told me "There ain't a house in 'The Acre,' (Red Light) that I ain't been in. At the drug store, all my deliveries were down there." Says he makes from $15.00 to $18.00 a week. Eugene Dalton. He is much handicapped physically, - lost one eye in an accident and the other is weak. This year he raised 135 bushels of corn on one acre (his father raised about one half as much and complained that the boy's land was better). The secret was that the boy worked hard on the plot, - fertilizing and cultivating, even bringing soil in from the woods. He got the First Prize for two years. With a crop of corn, tomatoes and rasberries to harvest, she still finds time to care for her own Victory garden and to attend a first-aid class. And for the scrap drive Mrs. Wood salvaged 1,600 pounds of outworn metal and rubber articles from the farm, and contributed them to her local collection agency

"Hell's Half Acre," a row of disreputable houses at the edge of the mill settlement at Avondale. These houses harbor the scum of the negroes and whites of the vicinity, and are separated from the mill village by a shallow ditch, which gave Gov. Comer, owner of the mills, the excuse that they were not on the mill property when the question of their removal was taken to him a while ago. A prominent social worker told me that not only do the mill people patronize these resorts, but that the broken down mill girls end up in these houses and that there are, on court record, three cases within a year of girls under fourteen years of age ruined in Hell's Half Acre. Told me, that there are innumerable instances showing the bad moral influence of the cotton mill settlement. (See report on Avondale conditions). Location: Birmingham, Alabama.
