The Virginia K. Johnson Home. A House of Refuge for Unmarried Mothers under twenty-one years old. A large proportion of the girls here came from the farms, their lives stunted by the monotonous work of cotton picking, many of them beginning at five and six years old. Case of Frank Wiegel, 3916 - # Ave., Brooklyn N.Y., injured after working 18 hours a day. He was injured at 1:55 A.M. January 18, 1914. Age 15 years. Employed by the Henry Bosch Paper Co., makers of wallpaper sample books. On Saturday, or rather Sunday morning at 1:55, Frank must have fallen asleep and in some way he knocked against the controlling pedal, and the next thing he knew his hand was caught in the machine. He sued the Co. for damages and after 2 years' litigation he received an award of $10,000 - $5,000 for each of 2 fingers which were amputated. The lawyer's fee has not yet been decided upon by the court. Location: New York--Brooklyn, New York (State)

Of a family of 7 children, all but 2 work stringing tags. The oldest child is 12. The nurse of the school which these children attend, reports that they are continually being sent home because of their dirty condition. A little fellow who looked about 6 was quite an expert. The children received 20 cents for stringing a thousand tage i.e. tags they tie a knot in a piece of string, and run the string thru sic the tag. They moisten the ends of their fingers in their mouths to tie the knots. They can string about a thousand tags in half an hour. One member of a second family which is stringing tags has impetigo, or skin disease, according to the school nurse. Location: Newark, New Jersey

"Dinner-Toters" waiting for the gate to open. This is carried on more in Columbus than in any other city I know, and by smaller children. (See photos.) Many of them are paid by the week for doing it, and carry, sometimes, ren i.e., ten or more a day. They go around in the mill, often help tend to machines, which often run at noon, and so learn the work. A teacher told me the mothers expect the children to learn this way, long before they are of proper age. (See also Vaughn's Georgia Report, April, 1913.) Eagle and Phoenix Mill. I saw him helping a man around moving and unprotected machinery. Everything in the mill is unguarded. No place for boys. Said he works only on Saturdays now, gets $1.00 a day. Selling newspapers own choice, to get money to go to moving picture shows. Visits saloons. Smokes sometimes. "Serves" papers to prostitutes. On May 25 William gave to investigator a list of houses of prostitution written in his own handwriting, to which he serves papers.
