Defense housing, Erie, Pennsylvania. Living conditions were so crowded in Erie, Pennsylvania, that a defense worker and his family of three were found to be living in this attic room. One of the defense industries there, which holds large contracts for the Navy, expects an increase of 4,000 workers during the coming year. Practically all vacancies are already taken, and even the contemplated construction of new homes will fill only a fraction of the need. Realizing the urgency of this need, the Division of Defense Housing has programmed 300 homes in this area, 60 of which are already completed (July 1941). In the meantime, trailers are being used by the Division as a temporary expedient until the more permanent homes are completed

Agriculture. Guayule cultivation. Guayule shrub in blossom. If growing conditions are good, the plant is a prolific seeder and the seeds have relatively high visability. Guayule plantings will produce a estimated 600 tons of rubber in 1943, provide a crop in 1944 which should yield 33,000 tons and a harvest in 1945 to yield 47,000 tons. An annual production of 70,000 tons to 80,000 tons will materialize if full capacity of nurseries now being built is utilized. Addition: This program is part of the Department of Agriculture's Emergency Rubber Project administered by the Forest Service under congressional authorization "to make available a source of crude rubber for emergency and defense uses"

Flame propogation in gas engines photographed. Washington, D.C., Aug. 26. A study of the mechanism of the flame propogation in the cylinder of a internal combustion engine is being made at the U.S. Bureau of Standards for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. A secial bomb made of steel, shown in the foreground, and designed to withstand pressures up to 500 lbs. to the square inch is used to show the progress of the flame and the rise in pressure which may be recorded photographically during the gas explosions under carefully controlled conditions. The camera, where the recordings are made, is in front of Dr. Ernest F. Flock of the Bureau of Standards, carries its film on a drum which may be revolved up to 4,000 revolutions per minute, this camera also records a neon light flashing at a thousandth of a second. The independent effects of pressure, temperature and charge composition upon flame speed and explosion ratio may be made with this equipment, 8/26/37

First Chinese seamen granted shore leave in wartime America. Chinese seamen on United Nations' vessels may now obtain shore leave in American ports. Heretofore, because of the large number of desertions by Chinese crew members, alien seamen of Chinese nationality have been detained on board when their ships touched American ports. As a result of conferences between representatives of the Chinese Embassy, the Recruitment and Manning Organization of War Shipping Administration, and the Immigration and Naturalization Service of the Department of Justice, Chinese seamen may now be granted shore leave if guarantees are given that they will not desert. After delivering the captain's laundry, this Chinese messboy aboard a British vessel will have his first visit in New York. He is one of a number of Chinese seamen who were recently permitted shore leave for the first time in the United States under wartime conditions
