Casey's machine shop, down by the railroad tracks in De Land, Florida, is one of the strongest members of the Volusia County pool, now starting on its third million-dollars worth of war production without a single rejection. F.W. Casey, owner of the shop, looks over some of the miscellaneous items in his yard from which he makes many of the machines he uses. De Land pool. Bits and parts. Faced with the problem of doubling production speed on a certain type of washer needed for the De Land, Florida pool aircraft contract, F.W. Casey went to his scrap heap. He took a two-cylinder gas engine from a spray machine used in an orange grove, a pump from the hydraulic lift of a dump truck, another pump from a steam engine cylinder, and built his hydraulic speed press. Too big for his little machine shop, the machine was set up in the yard, where it produces eight parts a minute for the war machine. Operating it is Norman Bane, Casey's one-man crew

De Land pool. Babcock airplane plant. Interior of the Babcock plant at De Land, Florida. When the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor, this was a dormant airplane plant. It was revived as a community project. Businessmen of De Land pooled their machines and resources, used this plant as a prime contractor to obtain war work, and now are producing over two-million dollars worth of war equipment in it. These motor repair racks, being turned out on a production schedule engineers termed "impossible" two months ago, are being built by former clerks, auto-mechanics and small shop operators who were caught by the impact of the war on their peacetime businesses

De Land pool. Moving circus. A circus moved out of its winter quarters in the Volusia County, Florida fairgrounds to make way for a defense plant when the De Land industrial pool got under way. Fairgrounds' buildings were the only ones in the community big enough to handle the needed assembly line. So when the community got its first big war contract, they asked the circus to move. Circus tractors, in the foreground, moved out the big wagons while city trucks brought in the first of the machines to tool up for war production. Machines of sixteen companies were housed under the roofs of the fairgrounds' buildings, working on one contract

Casey took parts from a junk heap and built the speed press pictured above. Now it sits in the yard, because of insufficient room in the little shop, and turns out eight washers a minute for the war machine. Operating it is young Norman Bane, who was an automobile mechanic up until six months ago, when he apprenticed as a machinist under Casey

Ben Stephens tramped six miles into De Land, Florida three times a week last fall to attend the city's vocational school, established to provide workers for the community war-production pool. He welds, runs an acetylene cutting machine, and doubles in brass on woodworking and the assembly line in the Babcock plant, prime contractors of the pool. He plans to put his sixty-five-year-old father on the job as his helper when he is fully trained. When the De Land, Florida industrial pool found it lacked buildings to fulfill a million-dollar war contract, it asked the Johnny J. Jones circus to move out of its winter quarters at the county fairgrounds so that the fair's seventeen-foot buildings could be used as a war plant. Within a few weeks, war production machines of sixteen different companies pooled into one community assembly line and began pounding out weapons beneath the gay circus banners on the domed buildings in the background

He was named after a southern general, Joe Wheeler, by a father who thought the General was "the fightinest man he knew" and wanted his son to be likewise. He ran a fishing tackle business that went out with priorities. Although he never had an arc welding holder in his hands before entering the De Land vocational school, he and another similarly trained man have acquired speed that has doubled the Babcock production
