Auto conversion to airplane engines. With normal operations of this automobile factory suspended for the duration, the gigantic task of converting the entire plant (floor space: 500' x 900') to war production was taken over by the National Defense Plant Corporation. This involved all degrees of remodelling, the removal of old and installation of new machinery, and extensive rebuilding of the plant itself. This hand milling machine, formerly used in manufacture of automobile motors, has been converted to production of airplane engines. In peacetime it was used to mill the pulley keyway on the front of crankshafts. It cost $150 to convert this $1,800 machine with installation of a special fixture to enable milling of staking nicks at each end of crankpin oil hobs. Chevrolet, Buffalo, New York

Priorities unemployment. No more money. John Jones, silk worker, is a victim of "priorities unemployment." It might have been James Smith, rubber worker. It might have been anybody. The "priorities unemployment" is part of a process of changing over, of retooling. And it's a temporary part, in most cases. Defense industries are expanding. In the long run, the defense program will make more jobs than it will break. It has already created 4,000,000 new jobs and there will be 2,500,000 more by April 1942. Production skills are needed for defense, John Jones'skills, James Smith's skills. How does "man meet job?"

Civilian protection. This volunteer civilian defense worker, an auxiliary fireman, is preparing to extinguish an incendiary bomb. He carries the sandbag before his face to protect him from the molten magnesium sizzling forth like fat from a frying pan. He will drop the whole bag on the bomb, and the heat of the bomb will burn through the burlap, releasing the sand. The sand will then run onto and around the bomb.
