A black and white photo of a man holding a bowl, possibly related to: Prospector blowing on pan of fine dirt which contains particles of gold in order to blow the dirt away and leave the heavy gold. In this dry panning the pan is rotated until the dirt is on one side and then with a decisive toss it is thrown into the air, the light dirt being then blown away by the wind and the heavy gold being caught again in the pan. Where the water level is so near the surface that you cannot dig a cave, you will have to build your storage house aboveground. This one is made of poles, and covered with straw, leaves and dirt. Grass should be planted on top of the dirt to keep the earth from washing away. The front wall must be made double thickness, with sawdust or other insulating material between to prevent freezing in winter and to keep cool in summer. Take notice that there is a lock on the door

Prospector operating dry washer called a papago. This dry washer is the old Indian method of washing for gold. The rocks and dirt are placed in the higher compartment.
