The last man to leave the Otranto was Capt. C.A. Dixon, U.S. Army Medical Corps, of Akron, Oh. Dr. Dixon, who had been very active in ministering to the troops after the collision, was reluctant to leave the Otranto, but was ordered by the Commander to jump aboard the destroyer because his services as a doctor appeared to be direly needed, owing to the number of men who had been injured in jumping from the troopship to the deck of the destroyer. Pepe Cruz, one of the Peruvian sheepherders at the Ladder Livestock Ranch's sheepherding operation near Dixon, Wyoming, holds two recently born lambs. Ladder sheephands also spend much of the year tending to the flock much higher in the Wyoming mountains.
