A group of school children in the third and fourth grades of the Cowpens, S.C., School. All in the front row are 9 and 10 years old (compare these with the little children shown in #2970-75.) The principal said only one out of 10 in the school were mill children (and he was not apparently very anxious that they should be) "The mill is only a small part of the village." [Some of the youngest workers in Laurel Cotton Mills, Miss. Tallest man is Mr. Hollingworth. Two of his boys in front row. Sylvester, ten years old, "Only helps in the mill afternoons and Saturdays." "But if I was twelve," he said, "I'd go to work to-morrow." The other boy, Floyd, said he was thirteen, but he doesn't seem to be. He said, "I sweeps. Get thirty cents a day. Sweepin' keeps you at it right steady. Not much chance to rest. You have to be twelve to work."  Location: Laurel, Mississippi.

Part of the family of Eva Tanguay, 61 Sylvester St., doffer in spinning room of Ayer mill. A half hour car ride in a crowded, stuffy car to and from work. Leaves home at 6 A.M. and returns at 6:30 P.M. The doffing work is standing and riding--bad for an adolescent girl. Father is a carpenter. Oldest brother is 11 years old, her sister  Muriel in middle of front row said she was 11 years old but I doubt it. Eva is on left end of front row. Said she was 14 but doubtful. The "East Side" of Pocahontas Country. The Aldrich home, - Buckeye, near Marlinton, West Virginia. This is one of the worst homes in the county. Note the duck-coop, made out of an old trunk, - in front yard. Mother said "The colt kicked the winders out." She is a no-'count mountaineer from Kentucky and her husband is a shiftless farmer who has let this farm run down to worthlessness. His father ran a prosperous farm here and owned hundreds of acres but the son has run thro[ugh] it all. Typical of worst conditions in the country. Oct 6, 1921. 5 P.M. Making dolls legs for Campbell Kids. Cattena family, 71 Sullivan St., 5[th] floor front. As soon as the photo was taken, Rose carried the box full of finished legs to the Aetna Doll and Toy Co, (whose name was on the box). Tessie, (on the right) lives down stairs and does this work there. Was helping here. Rose is 14 yrs. old. Lena, (deformed), is 12, Nettie, 9 yrs. old is very deft. They all work after school and often until 10 P.M.  Location: New York, New York (State)
