So scarce is food in most parts of the Balkans that they sell potatoes and other vegetables by the piece and not by the basket. In memory of Fallen Bulgar Heroes. The Bulgarian army, during its occupation of Macedonia, erected this fountain, to commemorate the death of an entire company of famous artillerymen who fell in the bloody battle of the Grand Couronne, at Doiran on the Macedonian front. With characteristic chivalry and a fine recognition of gallantry even in the enemy the British placed on the memorial an English translation of the Bulgarian inscription and requested visitors not to deface it. Beside the fountain is Miss Eugenia Daigle of Minneapolis, an American Red Cross nurse who went with an American field unit to the relief of the town of Doiran after its evacuation
