Synthetic rubber (Ameripol). This worker is standing on a "blowdown" tank, about ready to tap a polymerizer tank at the Akron, Ohio synthetic rubber plant of the B.F. Goodrich Company. Science and research. Mineral prospecting. Chemical prospecting for oil becomes more and more important as the war goes on the demand for oil increases. Petroleum engineers call chemical prospecting the first scientific approach to the detection of oil in the earth. The big glass condensers, with which these engineering students are working with a professor of geophysics are used in a soil analysis test. The percentage of wax left as residue at the end of the experiment indicates the nearness of petroleum to the site from which the soil sample was taken. Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado

Conversion. Copper and brass processing. Drawing seamless copper tube. Rough cast tubes tapered at one end to fit through a die are gripped in the tongs of the electric motor-driven vehicle on the drawbench and pulled or "drawn" through the die to be reduced to the desired size. Tubes usually are redrawn many times; each successive "draw" reduces the diameter, and increases the length. Brass tubes need to be annealed or softened between each draw, but copper tubes can be drawn several times without intermediate annealing. The tapered nose of the tubes may be seen just behind the drawbench operator. Chase Copper and Brass Company, Euclid, Ohio
