Women at war (Mrs. Smuda). If you didn't know better, you might think Mrs. Smuda spent the day comfortably darning socks for the family. Less than an hour before these pictures were made, this fifty-five-year-old mother and grandmother was skillfully tapering shells for machine guns at the Frankford Arsenal

Women in war. Machine gun production operators. This capable young woman is making an important contribution to America's war effort. Employed by a Midwest plant, converted from the production of spark plugs to machine guns, she's one of many skilled women milling-machine operators who are producing weapons for America's armed forces. Here, she's checking a slot she has just milled in a gun part. A.C. Spark Plugs

Twenty-millimeter machine guns for planes. Just as the "long rifle" of the American pioneer was the world's best gun of its day, so the machine guns of our modern air force must be better than any other. The saints carved on the walls of a church at Moskopoulis, Albania, recently received a baptism of fire when a quarrel between two tribes broke out in the town. Machine guns were trained on the church and this shows part of the damage that resulted to the ancient frescoes. The riot was stopped by the arrival of an American Red Cross Unit, both sides declaring a truce in order that the Americans might proceed with their relief work in safety

Flags flies over PT boat. In sea warfare since Pearl Harbor, the Navy tinset PT boats have frequently proved to be a deadly match for warships, submarines and merchant men. Their hulls are thin and their sides are small but their offensive and defensive armament is varied and effective. It consists of fifty caliber anti-aircraft machine guns, torpedoes and depth charges. These training pictures were taken at the United States Navy Motor torpedoed boat training center, Melville, Rhode Island. In their training, the tiny PT boat is learning to be constantly on the alert. In the background a crew member sighted the 50-caliber anti-aircraft machine gun while the officer in the foreground scans the sky for planes
