All work in Delta Cotton Mills, Mc Comb, Miss. Smallest boy, a band boy, Johnnie Mathews, apparently only ten or eleven, but his mother assured me he is nearly fourteen, which is very doubtful. Been working one year. Couldn't write his name. Next to him is Charlie Davis, a sweeper, seemed to be eleven, but mother told me twelve. Has been working a long time. Some samples (not all) of the children in the "Kindergarten Factory" run by the High Point and Piedmont Hosiery Mills, High Point, N.C. Every child in these photos worked; I saw them at work and I saw them going in to work at 6:30 A.M. and noons and out at 6 P.M. One morning I counted 22 of these little ones (12 years and under) going to work at about 6:15 A.M. Some of them told me their ages: 1 boy said 8 yrs. (worked when he was 7). 1 girl said 10 yrs. (apparently 7). 3 other girls said 10 yrs. 2 boys said 10 yrs. (1 got $3.00 a week). 1 boy said 11 yrs. 2 boys said 12 yrs. (1 said he makes $1. a day). (See also report.) Groups of workers in Clayton (N.C.) Cotton Mills. Every one went in to work when the whistle blew, and I saw most of them at work during the morning when I went through. Mr. W.H. Swift talked with a boy recently who said he was ten years old and works in the Clayton Cotton Mill, also that others the same age worked. Here they are. I couldn't get the youngest girls in the photos. Clayton is but a short ride from the State Capitol. (The Superintendent watched the photographing without comment.) Another "Dependent Father". He is so recorded in the Ordinary's office where he made application for his minor children to work. He has three children in the mill. When he married the present wife, she brought with her seven children, three of which are in the mill. The mother and father are both in mill work. He works part of the time. These parts were removed from cars before they were sent to a scrap iron dealer, who will process them and ship them out to steel mills. Some of these parts will be resold, but the vast majority, whether sold or not, will eventually end up in the furnace of an open hearth steel mill. There it will be melted down and combined with virgin metals to provide the fine quality steel needed for defense production
