Shaft #6 Pennsylvania Coal Co. Walls have been whiterewashed to make it lighter. Jan 16 I found Willie at home sick, His mother admitted he is only 13 yrs old; will be 14 next July. She said 4 months after the mine boss told the father to take Willie to work, and they obtained a certificate from Squire Barrett. The only thing the squire could do was to make Willie out to be 16 yrs. Willie's father & brother are miners and the home is that of a frugal German family. Location: Pittston, Pennsylvania.

[Letter from Isaac McCoy to his mother, Nancy McCoy, from Louisville, ...

Handwritten letter from Private Isaac McCoy of Co. A, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment, on pictorial lettersheet showing the U.S. Capitol building.

This picture shows the "Four Novelty Grahams" acrobatic performers at the Victoria Theatre, Philadelphia. The father is 23 years of age. Willie Graham is 5 years of age, and Herbert Graham is 3 years of age. At 9 P.M. on June 10th, 1910, these children were performing on the stage. Four times daily they do a turn which lasts from 12 to 14 minutes. Herbert Graham, the youngest, was said by the father to have commenced performing on the stage as a[n] acrobat when he was 10 months of age. Willie, now 5, is said to be the youngest acrobat in the world. The attached letter head shows some of the stunts these youngsters are engaged in. The mother of these boys was formerly a school teacher, and is now performing with this trio on the stage. The children are bright and strong, but have a playfulness about them which shows them to have forgotten the best years of childhood. Edward F. Brown, Investigator. Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania / Photo by Lewis W. Hine.

The Yelverton Family. Ten in the family. Live in a six-room house, "The only one on the street," they told me repeatedly. Two years ago the came here from the farm fifty miles away and a mile from the R.R. where they owned 135 acres. Father and four oldest boys have been working in the Laurel Cotton Mills for two years. Father said, "the little girls don't work, an' we're not goin' to let 'em if we can help it. We'll send 'em to school an' make ladies out of em. I don't reckon we'll ever go back to the farm. They all like the mill work. It's light work, but not very healthy though." The boys said, "We'd ruther work in the mill, It's easier. No hot sun an' no cold in winter 'cause they heat the mill then." The two youngest boys, eleven and thirteen years old, the father said, have been in the mill two years, and have had almost no schooling, and no likelihood of getting any more. The mother said, "I don't like to live in the city near so well. We're more shut in, an' we can't give the boys the schoolin' they ought to have 'cause they've got to work in the mill (wages is so low). We haven't been so well as on the farm." [Accident to young cotton mill worker. Giles Edmund Newsom (Photo October 23rd, 1912), while working in Sanders Spinning Mill, Bessemer City, N.C., August 21st, 1912, a piece of the machine fell on to his foot mashing his toe. This caused him to fall on to a spinning machine and his hand went into unprotected gearing, crushing and tearing out two fingers. He told the Attorney he was 11 years old when it happened. His parents are now trying to make him 13 years old. The school census taken at the time of the accident makes him12 years (parents' statement) and school records say the same. His school teacher thinks that he is 12. His brother (photo 3071) is not yet 11 years old. Both of the boys worked in the mill several months before the accident. His father, (R.L. Newsom) tried to compromise with the Company when he found the boy would receive money and not the parents. The mother tried to blame the boys for getting jobs on their own hook, but she let them work several months. The aunt said "Now he's jes got to where he could be of some help to his ma an' then this happens and he can't never work no more like he oughter."]. Location: [Bessemer, North Carolina].

Capps family at Columbia vaudeville. Baby of 21 months (been on stage for 6 months). Girl of 5 years (been on stage for 2 years). Boy of 7 years (been on stage for 1 year). Girl of 8 years (been on stage for 5 years). Boy of 12 years (been on stage for 8 years). Boy of 14 years (been on stage for 9 years). Oldest boy is acrobat, contortionist, etc. All do singing and dancing acts except baby, who appears in final scene as Charlie Chaplin. They appear 3 or 4 times a day--sometimes 7 days in the week, usually coming last on program (as a feature), which means they do not leave dressing room until nearly 11 p.m. Then, in addition, the life in cheap hotels and on the road "making new towns" is very unsettling. It was very touching to see the little ones curled up back of the scenes waiting for their act and getting 40 winks or the mother nursing the baby just before it was poked out onto the stage to do his little "turn." In spite of their stage life, their manners are good. They are quiet, well-appearing children, and the parents are kind and sympathetic. The father acts as nursemaid to the baby, and the mother dresses and changes the others and appears herself. She said: "They're never sick. It's the healthiest kind of life." The 8-year-old girl said: "I don't like it--the men in some places are so rough." There was some familiarity shown to them, but not much. Location: Grand Rapids, Michigan / Lewis W. Hine.

In Farm Security Administration (FSA) migratory labor camp. Family, mother, father and eleven children, originally from Oklahoma, where he had been a tenant farmer. Came to California in 1936 after drought. Since then have been traveling from crop to crop in California following the harvest. Six of the children attend school wherever the family stops long enough with mother and father. February 23, two of the family had been lucky and "got a place" (a day's work) in the peas on the Sinclair Ranch. Father had earned one dollar and seventy-three cents for ten hours a day. Oldest daughter had earned one dollar and twenty-five cents. From these earnings had to provide transportation to the fields twenty miles away. Mother wants to return to Oklahoma, father unwilling. She says, "I want to go back home where we can live happy, live decent, and grow what we eat." Brawley, Imperial Valley, California
