Charges that John L. Lewis 'saw to' the discharge of men to coerce workers. Washington, D.C., Dec. 13. Joe Ozanic, International President of the Progressive Mine Workers of America, testified before the Smith Committee investigating the National Labor Relations Board. He charged that John L. Lewis, as President of the United Mine Workers of America, caused the discharge of five men in the Progressive Union, to 'bring pressure' on other employees to leave the Progressive and join the United. 'The United Mine Workers--and if I've got to use the name of the dictator, John Lewis himself--brought pressure on the employees to force them to sign a petition. They refused. He then saw to it that the coal company discharged five men. The others then did sign the petition resigning from the Progressive Union and pledging loyalty to the United. They did it to save their jobs,' he told the committee

Ordinary seaman Jackson becomes a D.E.M.S seaman gunner. After a four months' course at a naval training establishment, ordinary seaman Jackson became a seaman gunner on board a merchant ship, a member of the Navy's Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships Service. D.E.M.S gunners and gunners of the Maritime Regiments, soldiers who now serve beside them, have destroyed or damaged 228 enemy aircraft since the beginning of the war. Equipped with a great variety of new weapons and anti-aircraft devices, the D.E.M.S Service has grown from a nucleus of 1,300 men to nearly 20,000 trained seamen gunners and gunslayers. Soldiers originally recruited from the Army as a temporary augmentation, later took the name Maritime Regiments, thus reviving and carrying on the 17th century regiment of that name. Marius, Andre, and Lucien have a name that is as French as Liberte, Egalite, Fraternity, if it comes from Alsace. Their name is Schiffenecker. They were driven away from their home near Nancy by Boche shells, and their father fought and died for France at Verdun. They too will be French men when they grow up, and French men with strong American leanings, for they are all "Stars and Stripes Children," mascots for the Aero Squadron. Baltimore, MD. For every Social Security Account Number issued an "emploee master card" is made in the Social Security Board Records Office. Identifying data, given on the application blank , Form SC-5[?], is transferred to this master card in the form of up-ended quadrangular holes, punched by key punch machines, which have a key card like a typewriter. Each key struck by an operator causes a [...] to be punched into the card. The position of a hole determines the letter or number other machines will reproduce from the master card. From this master card is made an acturial card, to be used later in statistical purposes. The master card also is used in other machines which sort them numerically, according to account numbers alphabetically according to the name code, translate the holes into numbers and letters, and print the data on individual ledger sheets, indexes, registry of accounts, and other uses. It is kept as a permanent record. The photograph above shows at work a part of the key machine section, where master cards are punched.
