Conversion. Copper and brass processing. Drawing seamless copper tube. Rough cast tubes tapered at one end to fit through a die are gripped in the tongs of the electric motor-driven vehicle on the drawbench and pulled or "drawn" through the die to be reduced to the desired size. Tubes usually are redrawn many times; each successive "draw" reduces the diameter, and increases the length. Brass tubes need to be annealed or softened between each draw, but copper tubes can be drawn several times without intermediate annealing. The tapered nose of the tubes may be seen just behind the drawbench operator. Chase Copper and Brass Company, Euclid, Ohio

Circleville, Ohio's "Hooverville" (see general caption). Begins to talk: "No man in the United States had the trouble I had since 1931. No man. Don't talk to me. I'm deaf. I lost my farm in 1931. I went to work in an acid factory. I got acid spilt on me; burnt my nose and made me blind. Then I get those awful headaches. I've been to lots of doctors, but that doesn't help me. They come on at sundown. No man in the United States had the trouble I had since 1931." (This last repeated many times through his talking.) "No man. It must be getting on to 6 o'clock now. My head's beginning to pain."

Shipbuilding (Norfolk Navy Yard). One of the major advances in shipbuilding during the last few years has been the substitution of welding for rivets in a number of vital parts of warcraft. Welding means much less weight and much less steel for each ship. This welder, working on the nose section of a new destroyer, is one of hundreds working on vessels under construction at Norfolk

Production. B-24 bombers and C-87 transports. Another mighty warship of the air will soon be ready for "launching." A nose door is being readied for assembly on a new consolidated transport plane at the end of the assembly line of a western aircraft plant. This new transport, an adaptation of the B-24 bomber, is known as the C-87 and carries one of the greatest human or cargo loads of any plane now in mass production. It is built in a plant equipped with one of the best air conditioning

Conversion. Copper and brass processing. Drawing seamless copper tube. Rough cast tubes tapered at one end to fit through a die are gripped in the tongs of the electric motor-driven vehicle on the drawbench and pulled or "drawn" through the die to reduce them to the desired size. The tube is checked with a micrometer after being drawn, to make sure it is the right diameter. The man looking through the short section of tube is inspecting the inner surface for flaws. The Chase Copper and Brass Company, Euclid, Ohio
