Barrage balloon manufacture. Getting supplies at the storehouse. This barrage balloon builder has come to the company's storehouse to obtain more reinforcing tape to fasten the seams of a barrage balloon. Small, but vital to production, every piece of material must pass over this counter and be recorded before issuance. The storekeeper is the only man who knows the secret formula for mixing the rubber cement combination which works most effectively in making air-tight seams. A poster comes to life. "This reminds me of home" said Sergeant Vineyard as he downed another piece of Mrs. Woolslayer's devil's food cake. When refreshments were brought out, the welder and the Army Sergeant forgot all about the war and fighting and production, and embarked on a gossip session the likes of which you'll find in Iowa, Kentucky, Oregon or Vermont. As American as baseball, the Sunday afternoon visit is a friendly and democratic means of relaxation common to soldier, worker, bank president and school child alike. Proudly seated next to the Sergeant is eight-year-old Georgia Ann Woolslayer

This man has obtained a government loan (FSA-Farm Security Administration) in Oklahoma. However, he migrated to Arizona two years ago and spent a year and a half there doing day labor in the cotton and sugar beet fields. He still has one son in Arizona doing day laborer work. Another son returned home to his family saying he wanted to be with them all and all would fare alike; the close family feeling is evident in this class of people. This man's main complaint was of the poor condition of his house. He said that owners would do nothing to help the farmer, "Why if I want a piece of wire to fix a fence, I have to steal it. Of course I have not done exactly that yet, but if I knew where there was a piece handy I would"

Civilian protection. Members of the rescue parties like this worker must be prepared to reach victims of bomb raids and fallen debris and give them emergency first aid treatment. It is not always possible to remove debris by hand, therefore, rescue workers' trucks carry equipment to enable the rescue squad to shore up masonry, cut through steel or stone, shut off broken mains or tunnel through conglomerate heaps of debris. Barrage balloon manufacture. Cementing with a paint brush. This worker is a fabric cementer busy applying a rigging patch to the side of a new barrage balloon. Although the fabric looks mussed at the moment, it will be stretched tight and smooth when the new piece of fabric is added. Seams are triple protected against leaks, folded over, cement-welded, taped on both sides with overlapping rubber adhesive tape. Such seams will never pull apart under pressure.

As the steel rollers revolve, the worker slashes out a section of a size easy to handle and rolls it into an armful. He holds his razor tightly against the drum until the proper amount has rolled up, then makes a quick, diagonal slash across the drum, cutting this piece away from the milling roll, and carries it away to a nearby truck. Usually there are about a half-dozen arm-sized rolls of prepared rubber in each completed batch. They are cut away in succession until all have been used up. Firestone (General Tires), Akron, Ohio
