Washington youngster solves parking problem. Washington, D.C., March 30. Transportation and no parking worries. Nelm Clark, 16-year old Washington youngster, solved this problem by combining a lawn mower motor with a set of motor cycle gears to make this unusual midget auto. Costing $60 to build the contraption weighs only 150 pounds--the weight is its main feature--and if you run out of gas you easily push it or tuck it under your arm and walk home, 3/30/1937

Production. Milling machines and machine castings. Not only the materials which go into the cupolas, but also the core sand used in the production of high-quality iron castings must be rigidly examined and controlled. The whole problem is essentially one for the chemist and metalurgist, so the laboratory, literally part and parcel of the cupola building, is constantly checking and rechecking during every minute that iron is being melted and poured. Location: a large Midwest machine tool plant

Conversion. Merry-go-round plant. Hooks for export packing cases of aircraft engines are bent on this horizontal bulldozer which was formerly used to bend rails for merry-go-rounds to delight the hearts of carefree children. It was thought impossible to convert the machine for this use, but a little thinking and ingenuity solved the problem. The slack was taken out of the bulldozer and it was found to work quite satisfactory as an aid to bending the heavy hooks into shape. Spillman Engineering Company, North Tonawanda, New York

War worker goes to Washington. Before leaving Cleveland, Ohio, Miss Clara Camille Carroll had heard of the crowded living conditions in the nation's capital. Production. War housing trailers. Overcoming metal shortage is a big problem in trailer manufacture. Western Trailer Company of Los Angeles has been able to replace metal fenders (wheel wells) successfully with plastic material made by a new process. Production of butylene glycol. Corn for which new industrial uses are sought is milled at the Northern Regional Research Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Peoria, Illinois. A fermentation process for converting grain into butylene glycol, developed in the laboratory, has proved successful on a semi-commercial scale in the pilot plant. Butylene glycol, hitherto a relatively rare chemical, can be used in making anti-freeze for automobiles and in the production of commercial solvents for various manufacturing purposes. Department scientists have succeeded on a laboratory scale in turning butylene glycol into butadiene, from which synthetic rubber can be made. The problem now is to develop a practical commercial process

National Archives. Washington, D.C., Nov. 22. Preservation of documents has long been a problem in libraries and offices of record. It was once done by a process known as 'crepelining,' which consisted in placing coarsely woven silk over and under the paper to be preserved with the use of adhesive. The most modern process now used is called the laminating process and consists in sandwiching the document between two sheets of thin, transparent cellulose acetate. This is then placed between two highly polished metal plates and subjected to heat and pressure in a hydraulic press
