Migrant family from Oklahoma in Texas. A family of six alongside the road. An example of how they fall between the relief agencies. The father, aged thirty-five, is an intelligent fellow, a painter by trade. Advanced tuberculosis, victim of an occupational disease. Ineligible for WPA (Works Progress Administration), rated as totally disabled. As a state charge under Oklahoma relief standards, the family were told the maximum relief would be seven dollars every two weeks. They lost their home, their furniture, took to the road a year ago and when the photographs were made they were found to be without money, shelter, and without food for the four children

Waiting for the semimonthly relief checks at Calipatria, Imperial Valley, California. Typical story: fifteen years ago they owned farms in Oklahoma. Lost them through foreclosure when cotton prices fell after the war. Became tenants and sharecroppers. With the drought and dust they came West, 1934-1937. Never before left the county where they were born. Now although in California over a year they haven't been continuously resident in any single county long enough to become a legal resident. Reason: migratory agricultural laborers

Senate Banking and Currency Committee hears Secretary Wallace. Washington, D.C., June 7. Secretary of Agriculture, Henry Wallace, today told the Senate Banking and Currency Committee that he approved the bill to revamp the Farm Credit System because farmers need relief from 'excessive interest charges and debts which they cannot pay. In addition,' he said, '60 percent of all the National Farm Loan Associations have had their capitol so impaired that they cannot make new loans. Beyond question there is room for improvement in both the general farm credit situation and the Federal Land Bank System'
