Air raid protection--what to do in your home. This is not the way to spend the evening, but simply a handy place to go if bombs suddenly start falling nearby. WAACs. In order to save themselves, as well as others who face the peril of shipwreck at sea, members of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps undergo an intensive training course at Daytona Beach, Florida. They learn to become proficient swimmers, but more than that, to rescue less fortunate ones and to employ emergency methods when they lack or lose life boats. These WAACS swim across the pool, using their inflated barracks bags as giant water wings

Workers on Rickenbacker rescue boat. How mileage rationing can save lives on the battlefronts was pointed up dramatically by Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, who with six members of his crew were rescued after three weeks adrift on life rafts in the Pacific. "One tire that is not wasted on pleasure driving may save the lives of seven men as ours was saved," Rickenbacker said. One old rubber tire is sufficient to make a three-man raft of the type that saved the party in the Pacific

Workers on Rickenbacker rescue boat. They played a part in the rescue of Captain Eddie Rickenbacker and six men of his crew in the Pacific. Elmer K. Brown and Flossie Anson, of Akron, Ohio, built one of the two life rafts on which the party drifted for three weeks. Miss Anson, who has been continuously at work on boats and ballons for the past six years, said "it certainly was a worthwhile thrill and satisfaction to know that we had a share in the making of the boats which effected the rescue of the Rickenbacker party"

Civilian protection. Members of the rescue parties like this worker must be prepared to reach victims of bomb raids and fallen debris and give them emergency first aid treatment. It is not always possible to remove debris by hand, therefore, rescue workers' trucks carry equipment to enable the rescue squad to shore up masonry, cut through steel or stone, shut off broken mains or tunnel through conglomerate heaps of debris.
