Averzano family, Room 24, 2-4 Prince St., N.Y. Photo taken at 1:30 P.M. Mar. 6th, a school day, and Josephine said she wasn't going to school this week on account of the work. "I like to work, and I like to go to school too." Our investigator reports her as 13 yrs. old, and a truant. The 8 yr. old sister can speak no English and has never been to school. The work was strewn all over the dirty floor.  Location: New York, New York (State)

Part of the family of Eva Tanguay, 61 Sylvester St., doffer in spinning room of Ayer mill. A half hour car ride in a crowded, stuffy car to and from work. Leaves home at 6 A.M. and returns at 6:30 P.M. The doffing work is standing and riding--bad for an adolescent girl. Father is a carpenter. Oldest brother is 11 years old, her sister  Muriel in middle of front row said she was 11 years old but I doubt it. Eva is on left end of front row. Said she was 14 but doubtful. Adrienne Pagnette, an adolescent French illiterate, speaks almost no English. Is probably 14 or 15. Doffs on top floor spinning room in Glenallen Mill. Her brother Francis has a regular job doffing. Said he is 15 but Mr. Hine doubted it. Her sister Anna said she was 12 years old and helped older sister in Glenallen Mill. Been at it all summer. She stands next to Adrienne in Photo 2396, and in 2396A (taller girl). Photo 2396 shows the entire family of 17 members, 8 or 10 of them in the mill. Almost every one of them illiterate. Stooping, reaching and pushing heavy boxes is bad for young girls adolescent.  Location: Winchendon, Massachusetts.

A 9 year old boy, Jo Cafarella, 39 Warren Street, Somerville, Massachusetts. His sister Lena, 10 years, and Mary Lazzaro, 13 years old, his cousin lives at 17 South Street. Some of the younger workers (not all) who work in the Biloxi Canning Factory. On right-hand end of photo is Lazro Boney, 12 years old, been working 4 years at this factory. Both he and his mother said he makes $1.75 a day when shrimp are large and plentiful. He made $57.00 last year in 3 months. His brother Ed (not in photo) 14 years old, makes $2.25 on good days. Another brother, Pete, (one of the smallest in the photo) and 10 years old makes 50 cents a day. Two other brothers work at raw oysters; one, 17 years old, makes $4.00 a day. Eight ch[ildre]n in family. The mother said, "Lazro goes to school when he ain't workin; but he's gettin' so he'd rather stay home with the boys than go to school." Family lives at 616 Charter St. Next to Lazro (in photo) is Jim Kriss, 11 years old, been working at this factory two years; makes $1.50 on good days. His brother Jo Kriss (in photo next to girl on left end) 12 years old, makes $1.00 a day. Another brother Ed, not in photo, 14 years averages $2.50 a day. Sister Marie 7 years old (see photo at home) works when not tending the baby, and makes 25 cents a day. Mother picks also. Youngest boy in photo is Tommy Davis, 8 years old. 918 Charter St. Worked last year. Ester Barton, a 12 year old boy also is the photo, couldn't spell his own name. Been working two years. "Teeny" Adams, girl on left end of photo, 11 years old, makes $1.15 some days. Missed three weeks of school last month, working. Works now before school, or all day.
