Dummy Oscar ready for Army Air Corps anniversary. Washington, D.C., June 30. Dummy Oscar, jauntily attired in the now antiquated army aviator's uniform of the first decade of the 20th century, sits clasping the sticks of the army's first airplane in readiness for the 30th anniversary of the birth of the Army Air Corps early in August. Paul Garber, Assistant Curator in charge of the Smithsonian aircraft collection, is shown with the dummy in the plane built by the Wright Brothers and accepted by the government in 1909. The plane now in the Smithsonian Institution is the same one used in the test flights at Fort Meyer, Virginia by Orville Wright

One of the largest collections of the bones of some of the earliest mammals are now being studied and classified at the Smithsonian Institution. Dr. C. Lewis Gazin, Smithsonian paleontologist shown in the photograph, obtained specimens of [more] than 50 species of long-extinct creatures from the so-called "Puerco and Torrejon Horizons" in New Mexico last summer. Veteran Polish weather expert joins staff of Smithsonian Institution. Washington, D.C. March 14. With home, laboratory, and invaluable records of years presumably lost in the recent Polish War, Dr. Henryk Arctowski, of the University of Lvov, one of Poland's foremost scientists and former Antarctic explorer, has started at the Smithsonian Institution the monumental job of determining direct effects of changes in the Sun's radiation on weather conditions on Earth. Recognized in all countries as one of the greatest living authorities on world weather, Dr. Arctowski is continuing his studies in efforts to find relationships between solar conditions and rainfall, barometric pressure, etc., at various places on Earth. His earliest meteorlogical observation began as a young geologist on the Antarctic exploring ship Belgica in 1897-99. For release morning papers of March 18 - 40
