During the days following this, I proved the ages of nearly a dozen of these children, by gaining access to Family Records, Life Insurance papers, and through conversations with the children and parents, and found those that I could prove to be working now, or during the past year at 10 and 11 years of age, some of them having begun before they were ten. Further search would reveal more. (See Hine Report.) Location: Lindale, Georgia.

Government discovers method to preserve movie film indefinitely. Washington, D.C., July 8. People living in the year 2000 will be able to see and hear today's history in the making through experiments on preserving movie film now being conducted by the National Bureau of Standards. The experts at the bureau recently completed "accelerated aging tests in which films in six months went through the effects of 50 years' storage in a cool dark room. These tests showed that cellulose, or explosive film, would last from 50 to 100 years. The new Safety or Acetate film "may be preserved for longer periods." Unofficially, the experts put the figure at several hundred years. The following set of pictures were made at the Bureau of Standards and the National Archives Building. (1) Accelerated aging, The stability of the films is tested similarly to paper. They are heated in this oven at 100 [degrees] C and tested for loss of flexibility and for evidences of chemical decomposition. Arnold Soorne, of the Bureau Staff, is picture making the test

Defense housing, Erie, Pennsylvania. Living conditions were so crowded in Erie, Pennsylvania, that a defense worker and his family of three were found to be living in this attic room. One of the defense industries there, which holds large contracts for the Navy, expects an increase of 4,000 workers during the coming year. Practically all vacancies are already taken, and even the contemplated construction of new homes will fill only a fraction of the need. Realizing the urgency of this need, the Division of Defense Housing has programmed 300 homes in this area, 60 of which are already completed (July 1941). In the meantime, trailers are being used by the Division as a temporary expedient until the more permanent homes are completed

Sanford Cotton Mill. Accident case. Carl Thornburg a 12 year old boy who went to work at 11. A few weeks ago he caught his arm in the "lapper" machine, and broke it in 2 places. He said: "I sure didn't mean to. Was jus goin through the lapper room an fust thing I knew everything went black." The family is hard-up. Father is a paralytic. Here is a real chance for a mill to do a benevolent deed by making some recompense to this crippled boy and his paralytic father. They think it's charity to give a boy work under legal age, but when he is injured they forget that side of it. No suggestion of any kind of recompense has been heard. Jim Browning said he was 12 years old, but that is doubtful. Has worked 6 months here; gets 50 cents a day. Is in the 2nd grade at school. Location: Sanford, North Carolina.
