Shipbuilding. "Liberty" ships. This maze of rolling cranes, at a large Eastern shipyard is a typical scene in many large shipyards at work on ships for Uncle Sam's Navy and merchant fleet. Stocks of material are piled up for the cranes to take to vessels under construction so there is no delay in production while waiting for sections or materials. All parts are prefabricated in this huge Eastern plant which formerly turned out freight cars. The completed sections are then carried six miles to the ways on flat cars. Shipbuilding. "Liberty" ships. Shell plates of a ship at the bow, where the inner plates are first bolted to the outer plates for added strength. Rags. Collection and processing. A portion of the sorting room in a large Eastern rag processing plant. In this room new rag remnants, consisting chiefly of cuttings received from clothing factories, are sorted. The rags are classified and separated according to the type of cloth; colored rags are graded according to the ease with which they can be bleached. The baskets in back of the women are filled with rags that have been sorted and classified. The women work in teams of two; it takes a team about two hours to sort the rags in one full bale. In another part of the plant, a room of the same size and general appearance as this is used for sorting used rags. Shapiro Company, Baltimore, Maryland
