Significance: The James C. Chaney House, a log "I" house, is an excellent example of the vernacular architecture that dominated Arkansas' landscape during the antebellum period. The house is located near Osage in southeast Carroll County, situated in the hills that divide the Boston and Ozark Mountains in northwest Arkansas. Osage (originally Fairview until 1848) was settled by Kentucky and Tennessee families beginning in 1830. James C. Chaney, one of the area's pioneers, migrated from Overton County, Tennessee in 1834. Chaney settled on bottomland along the Osage Creek as documented on the 1841 survey plat.
