Summary

Significance: The Lockport Power House and Dam were built as part of an extension to the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal after the Illinois State Legislature authorized the Sanitary District to develop a water power plant on the canal in 1903. The powerhouse is representative of typical powerhouse design and construction at the beginning of the twentieth century and contains machinery from the various periods of its operational history.
