Conversion. Frying pans to aircraft parts. From egg poachers and frying pans to caps, struts, flap hinges and other small parts for America's air force; from a dozen employees to forty; that's the story of this small Eastern factory whose defense subcontracts have enabled it to convert rapidly from civilian to war production

Conversion. Frying pans to aircraft parts. Peacetime production of this small Eastern manufacturing plant consisted of such objects as the aluminum photograph dryer (upper left), radio dials, and similar articles for civilian use. Its parts for America's fighting planes. Pictures above is one of the owners of the company. He's holding another peacetime product, a radio chassis

Conversion. Frying pans to aircraft parts. Using a lathe converted from manufacture of egg poachers, frying pans and radio parts, this employee of a small Eastern plant is milling an aluminum alloy flap hinge forging to be used on American fighting planes. Precision Metal Company, New York, New York

Conversion. Frying pans to aircraft parts. One of the owners of an Eastern manufacturing company explains the workings of a soundproof auxiliary engine cover to a friend. He's producing this engine cover on an experimental basis now, along with small aircraft parts, instead of the egg poachers and frying pans he used to make before converting his plant to war production. This cover will enclose motors used on four-engine bombers to take care of retracting gear and other essentials not connected with the main drive engine. Precision Metal Company, New York City, New York

Subcontracting aircraft parts. These are aluminum flaps for military aircraft. The workers are in one of the canvas covered shops created in a former airship dock. The shops are enclosed to facilitate heating, since it would be impossible adequately to heat the entire air volume of the building, which approximates 45,000,000 cubic feet. Goodyear, Akron, Ohio

Production. Pratt and Whitney airplane engines. Cylinder heads for R-1340 Wasp planes are inspected in a large Eastern plant now producing a huge number of fine American engines for our fighting air forces. Pratt and Whitney Aircraft

Conversion. Food machinery plant. This turret lathe was purchased second-hand from a nearby shoe factory to speed production on war subcontracts held by a New England plant which formerly turned out cube steak machinery. Edwin Becker is checking on a retooling job in progress which will eventually fit the new lathe to thread three-and-a-quarter-inch hexagonal nuts. Becker is checking the measurements of the tool hole in the turret with those of the specially-built tap which will do the threading. Cube Steak Machine Company, Boston, Massachusetts

Production. Pratt and Whitney airplane engines. A new Pratt and Whitney airplane motor running on a test stand at a large Eastern plant. Before being shipped to one or another of our aircraft factories, the engine must demonstrate its ability to meet rigid Air Force requirements. Pratt and Whitney Aircraft
