Cove Hydroelectric Development, Wood & Concrete Flume, Cove Power Plant Road, Grace, Caribou County, ID

Significance: The large wood and concrete flume is the most remarkable feature of the Cove Hydroelectric Development from both an aesthetic and an engineering perspective. The flume had to be precisely designed and carefully constructed to maintain a gentle slope along a bench overlook at the Bear River such that the full height of the elevation change from start to finish could be used to turn the low-head turbine in the Cove power house. The flume is over 1 mile long and was constructed in place using an on-site cement plant and sawmill/carpentry shop. The flume is unique in the Intermountain West and made possible the extraction of 7.5 megawatts of electricity in challenging terrain.
