Freight train operations on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad between Chicago and Clinton, Iowa. The train stops at DeKalb, Illinois for coal and water. The brakemen make an inspection of the train. Since their time is limited, they walk on the side opposite the wind so they smell any hot-boxes on the other side without having to walk both sides of the train
