George Washington Smith Farm, House, Elk Fork Road, Ripley, Jackson County, WV
Summary
Significance: In its local context, the George Washington Smith House is a virtually unequaled interpretation in wood of a vernacular Greek Revival house. It exhibits two to three periods of activity. The floor plan and decorative elements of the period 1 house are virtually unaltered. Its facade entry and door are intact and although its siding and windows are from a subsequent alteration they do not detract from the feeling that the mass, scale, symmetry, and fenestration evoke of this Greek Revival interpretation of the I House. In addition, although it has been obscured from public view by the rear addition, the matching rear entry and door are also intact.
