Mrs. Helen L.C. Lawrence who was born in Portugal and came to the United States and San Leandro, California when she was a young girl. She has always been active in civic affairs and was elected a member of the five-member council of San Leandro. The five members of the council elect a mayor from their group and Mrs. Lawrence was honored with this position. "I say honored though it has been mostly hard work. I was proud that I, a Portuguese by birth, should be deemed worthy of this office. The Portuguese people are well aware of the very great privileges they enjoy as citizens of this country and we all strive to be just as aware of the duties that citizenship brings." Mrs. Lawrence is a block warden in the civilian defense program

Governor John Moses of North Dakota, in a conference with President Roosevelt, presented a pessimistic report on unemployment and relief problems in North Dakota. Moses said his state was in a bad financial condition as a result of 10 years of crop failures and that county and state budgets were unbalanced

White House conference on unemployment census. Washington, D.C., Sept. 24. Holding his first press conference today, John D. Biggers, Administrator of the Unemployment Census, announced that he had called a conference at the White House on Monday to formulate plans for the first unemployment census ever conducted in the United States. Included among those invited to the meeting were John L. Lewis, CIO head; William Green, A.F. of L. President; George H. Davis, President of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; W. Averill Harriman, Chairman of the Commerce Department's Business Advisory Council; and Leaders of Farm and Cooperative Groups.
