Summary
Significance: 22 by 100 foot guard lock constructed in 1829 by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company. The first of five locks in the 3.8 mile Section Five between the Slate Dam and the outlet lock below Hokendauqua Creek. Lift: 9.9 feet. Although later combined locks would have a higher lift, the 9.9 foot lift was the highest on the canal as originally laid out. In addition, no other guard lock had more than a 1.4 foot lift. The lock and the feeder channel next to it are dramatic in the height of the exposed stonework, which remains in good condition. At the head of the lock are wooden timbers with the iron wickets still in place. Adjacent, to the east are the foundations and cellar hole of a locktender's house.
