Main & Market Streets (Structures), Courthouse Square, Main, Market, Center, Clay & Broadway, Mount Carroll, Carroll County, IL

description

Summary

1987 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Honorable Mention

Significance: Mount Carroll is the seat of Carroll County, Illinois...Like other small towns in Illinois, Mount Carroll has experienced both the benefits and vicissitudes of its location. Though platted in 1843, development progressed slowly until 1862 and the arrival of the Chicago, Minneapolis and St. Paul Railroad. The railroad enabled the town to find a much broader market for its largely agricultural produce and to secure a variety of building materials for its expanding commercial and residential blocks. Two streets in particular, Main and Market, lined with buildings in the Federal, Italianate, and Queen Anne styles, came to symbolize the progress...The railroad that was once so vital first lost it passengers and then its freight to the automobile and truck. Trains no longer make a stop and the old depot has long since disappeared.
