Significance: The Newport NIKE Missile Battery D-57/58 is one of sixteen original NIKE Missile Batteries that surrounded the city of Detroit, Michigan in 1958. D-57/58 is an intact example of a Dual NIKE Missile Battery significant for its role in American military history, the history of the Cold War, and specifically the history of the Detroit Defense Area. Further, NIKE Missile Battery D-57/58 is an important example of the relationship between military installations and the industrial economy of the State of Michigan.
