Picatinny Arsenal, 800 Area, Complete Rounds-Melt Loading District, State Route 15 near I-80, Dover, Morris County, NJ
Summary
Significance: Originally built as a depot for storage of powder and other armaments, during the 20th century Picatinny Arsenal became a leading facility for the research, development and production of munitions. Located on the north and west shore of Picatinny Lake, the 800 Area was constructed to replace structures destroyed in the explosion of 1926. Its design provided for a smooth flow of materials and explosives through a grouping of four major buildings connected by walkways.
