Sacred Heart Mission, Interstate 90 & Interchange 39, Cataldo, Shoshone County, ID

description

Summary

Suggested address, Interstate 90 & Interchange 39, is not verifiable in documentation.

Significance: This is one of the earliest Catholic missions constructed in Idaho Territory and is now the oldest building in Idaho. The site was selected by Father De Smet in 1846 while on one of his visits to the Coeur d'Alene Indians. The site was 1/8 mile from the Old Yellowstone Trail. The structure represents an unusual design concept in early pioneer structures. Construction was begun in 1848 by Father Ravalli, a Jesuit priest. It was built by Ravalli, Brother Huybrechts, and Native workmen using few tools: a broad-axe, an augur, some rope and pulleys, a pen knife, and an improvised whipsaw. The Jesuits utilized the Mission from 1846-1877, at which time the Mission was moved to De Smet, Idaho.
