description

Summary

STORED ON SITE. mchr

2012 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry

Significance: The building houses a large collection of modern, handcrafted religious art which was commissioned specifically for the space and is incorporated into the design of the structure. Artwork is used throughout the space to depict religious figures and share their stories and includes hand-carved wood statuary, locally designed and crafted stained glass scenes, and Venetian crafted glass mosaics. The church's unique fixed art collection coupled with its atypical, but impressively executed architectural styling set its architecture apart from every other structure in existence. In addition to bearing historic architectural significance, it is also bears great cultural significance. The parish spreads out into the surrounding community which congregates at the church. Here the community gathers in groups of friends, family and peers for education, socialization, tradition, celebration, worship, and comfort. The mere existence of the church has created a cherished subculture and affects the everyday lives of the members in the community. Neither the campus, nor church is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but is believed to be eligible. It appears to satisfy the requirements for Criterion A due to its contribution to the shaping of the community. It also appears to satisfy Criterion C due to the church's unique architectural style and the high quality of art that is part of its original design and execution.

Headed for last cleanup. Six giant truck tires, of the non-directional type are being wheeled in for cleaning and painting. This pattern, developed for the U.S. Army in 1941 is used for field equipment....gives excellent traction in forward or reverse because of the horizontal cleats, yet rides well on the highway on the continuous center rib. Removing cured tube from mold. As the tire molds are all-automatic, so are the tube molds. This one has just opened; all the operator need do is remove the finished tube and put in another raw one. Note the seam marks in the mold itself, which leave their imprint on the tube. Thus a seamless tube may appear to have a collection of many sections. Firestone (General) Tires, Akron, Ohio

Barrage balloon manufacture. Reinforcing tail rigging of a new ballonet type barrage balloon, these workers at the barrage plant are cementing, seaming and rolling reinforcing tape across points in the tail and fins where strain is greatest. General Tire and Rubber Company, Akron, Ohio

Conversion. Beverage containers to aviation oxygen cylinders. After they are stamped on the huge toggle press in the metal division of a large rubber factory, these cylindrical domes which make up half of a shatterproof oxygen cylinder, are placed on a large conveyor where they are carried to workmen who will apply the circumferential and longitudinal straps. Cylinders are used for high altitude flying as a source of oxygen. Firestone, Akron, Ohio

Synthetic rubber (Ameripol). These tanks contain vegetable fats and butadiene, a highly volatile gas "cracked" from crude petroleum. These raw materials for synthetic rubber are piped from freight cars into these storage tanks. Goodrich
