Summary
Significance: The Third Street S.E. Bridge is located in the hometown of the Wrought Iron Bridge Company and is typical of the many pin-connected through truss bridges they built in the period between 1880 and 1900. Their wrought iron Pratt-type truss bridges approached perfection, with respect to providing economical structures that were both lightweight and strong, consisting of simple members that were relatively easy to manufacture, transport and erect. David Hammond, founder of the Wrought Iron Bridge Company was a self-taught genius who conceived and put together a highly successful company that marketed, designed, fabricated and built notable bridges.
