Summary
Significance: Designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe and is located on the ground floor of the original north wing of the U.S. Capitol. The space occupied what had been the lower part of the two-story Senate Chamber when Latrobe's work at the Capitol began in 1803, only the north wing had been constructed, and many of its interior features were already in poor condition. In a repair and reconstruction effort Latrobe introduced new vaults and domes supported on new columns and piers along existing walls...
