Waddell "A" Truss Bridge, Spanning Lin Branch Creek, Trimble, Clinton County, MO

description

Summary

The address was changed to reflect that the bridge was moved from its original location (Spanning Linn Branch Creek, Trimble vicinity, Clinton County, Missouri) to Parkville, Missouri, in 1987. (March 2016)

Significance: The bridge was designed in accordance with John Alexander Low Waddell's patent of November 13, 1894 (#529,220). Waddell developed the "A" truss to meet the need for a reliable, easily erected, inexpensive, short-span railroad bridge. It is regarded as a transitional phase in bridge design. The bridge was converted to highway use in 1953. When it was documented by HAER in 1980, it was one of only two Waddell "A" truss bridges that had survived in the United States. It was moved and became a pedestrian bridge in 1987.
